If you’re on the lookout for a new kitchen sink and have a little bit of flexibility in the dimensions, capacity, and cost then you might want to consider a farmhouse sink for your new home or to replace your old kitchen sink. The simplicity of a single, deep sink is very attractive and is the key element in its design. Although they are our favorite, there are some important things you should know about farmhouse sinks that no one talks about!
Here are a few things to think about…
#1 – Farmhouse Sinks Take Up Space
Farmhouse sinks are plenty deep (making it hard for a tall person to bend down and do dishes!)
Keep in mind: the fact that farmhouse sinks are so deep translates into lost space below the sink
Plan on as little as 12-inches in height of free space under your new farmhouse sink.
You might just as well plan on relocating everything that is currently under your old sink to a new location to make room for the new apron-front sink.
As for width, farmhouse sinks typically range from 20 to 36 inches wide. So make sure your cabinetry can accommodate that.
#2 – Prepare for broken dishes
Even though accidents happen in any normal kitchen, there might be more than usual if you have
a farmhouse sink.
Because they are designed with extra sturdy and durable materials, glasses and plates shatter really easily when dropped in the sink.
It would be a good idea to invest in some break-resistant dishware or just not put any dishes in your sink at all to avoid accidents!
#3 – They show everything
While other sinks like stainless steal tend to hide grime and wear-and-tear, a white farmhouse will show it all.
You will need to clean it more frequently, so opt for baking soda! It will make your sink look brand new again.
Not only will dirt be more visible, but scratches, too.
If you cook with a lot of iron pans, you should be very cautious about scratches in your sink. An easy way to avoid scratches is to purchase a rink rack to put at the bottom of your sink. This will keep pots, pans, and other dirty items from ruining your beautiful sink!
#4 – Types of Material For Farmhouse Sinks
White farmhouse sinks are most commonly made of fireclay or porcelain.
Fireclay: Fireclay sinks are made of clay, which is heated to an extremely high temperature that makes the sink hard and durable. It also gives the sink its beautiful high shine. The durability of fireclay means that it is resistant to scratches and chips and is easy to clean.
Porcelain: Porcelain sinks are a ceramic material, again heated to high temperatures, although not quite as high as fireclay. They look similar to fireclay sinks but are less expensive. Porcelain sinks are not quite as durable as fireclay and are more prone to chipping and discoloration.
